Morning Workout Boost!

Even getting pumped up for just a random Thursday? Are you sure you’re ready for this life-changing secret?
Here it is: Get a workout in in the morning!
I have been foregoing morning workouts in favor of the extra sleep lately, mostly because it’s really hard to get up and work out when it’s wicked dark outside. But today, since I have my work Christmas party in the afternoon and then another holiday get together after that, I knew it was a morning workout or nothing.
So, I set my alarm for 5:15, and after not being able to fall asleep until almost 1am, just hoped for the best. And wouldn’t you know, when my alarm went off at 5:15, I was wide awake and ready to go!
I did this back + core workout, plus 100 crunches at the end, but listening to the Andy Grammer iHeart Radio station had me smiling through the entire thing. (I fell asleep to the Imagine Dragons station last night, and that’s a good one too, in case you’re interested. Oh, and iHeart Radio has a sleep timer which is an advantage over the Pandora app.)

And then, I found myself jamming out to the radio in the car on the way to work and feeling totally ready to tackle the day. It’s really hard to get out of bed sometimes, but breaking a good sweat really does give you such a fantastic boost of energy!

Backtracking a little…
Yesterday I had to run a couple errands at lunch, and I was starving, so I stopped at a local bakery/café to pick up a sandwich to bring back to work with me. I got the turkey cranberry (with turkey, fresh cranberry sauce, cheese, and lettuce) on grilled homemade wheat bread, and it was absolutely delicious.
It came with a salad and chips, but I only ate half, plus a cinnamon apple on the side:
And also some of these bad boys that I picked up while out shopping:
(Moral of the story: don’t go shopping on an empty stomach!)
After work, I headed home and did this chest + biceps workout, plus 45 minutes of running on the treadmill.
And here’s another little secret: if anyone ever saw what I do on my treadmill at home, I would be so embarrassed. (I guess it’s bad enough that I’m writing about it, but still.) In between (and sometimes during) my running intervals, I’m almost always dancing. A good song comes on, and I just can’t help it! I sing out loud and dance around and it’s a blast – but I would be forever mortified if somehow anyone ever saw me jamming out like that with sweat dripping down my face. Just one perk of having your own treadmill though; I don’t have to worry about looking like a fool!
I used an old playlist during my run last night, and it really had me dancing, even more so than normal:
How can you not dance to those songs?
For dinner last night, I heated up the rest of my sandwich and ate it alongside the salad and remaining chips. Nothing easier than leftovers!
Questions:
What are some of your favorite iHeartRadio/Pandora stations?
Do you prefer morning, afternoon, or nighttime workouts?
Do you find that working out in the morning gives you an extra boost for the day?
Humming Right Along
Posted: October 19, 2012 Filed under: daily, music | Tags: daily, music Leave a comment »I’ve been really into music over the past week or so. I’m usually not such a big music person unless it’s listening to playlists during workouts or on long car rides, but lately I’ve been putting music on instead of the TV for background noise at home and falling to sleep to it at night. It’s soothing, and humming along with the songs (I can’t sing to save my life) helps to keep your mind from wandering.
It’s also funny to me how much you can relate to different songs at different points in your life. No matter what you’re going through – good or bad, happy or sad – there’s probably been a song written about it. In a way, I think that’s kind of cool. It helps make you feel like you’re not alone; someone else has been there.
I admittedly have a very non-uniform taste in music (these are definitely not my favorite workout songs), but here are some of the songs I’m loving for easy listening right now – some for the words, but some just for their pretty melodies and catchy tunes.
Hunter Hayes (love him) – “Wanted”
Taylor Swift – “Begin Again”
Gary Allan – “Every Storm (Runs Out of Rain)”
Ed Sheeran – “The A Team”
One Direction – “Live While We’re Young”
Questions:
What are your favorite songs right now? I love suggestions!
Does your taste in music vary by the activities you’re doing while listening to it? Mine definitely does.
Bowwwwlin’ On The Freeway…

I have no idea why it started, but I remember it vividly, and to this day, he still calls me every time he hears it on the radio. I can’t tell you how many voicemails I’ve gotten over the years with just that song playing in the background.
The thing is, for some (unknown) reason I got it in my head back then that the lyrics were actually “bowling on the freeway” instead of “rolling on the river.” Maybe I was just creative? In any case, I had my own dance moves to go along with my version of the lyrics that involved a bowling motion and a hold-your-nose-and-pretend-to-swim motion.
And I guess that “creativity” hasn’t been lost on me over the years because I still find myself dancing in odd places, at odd times… like on the treadmill. Pretty frequently, actually. I’ll be running or walking and a good song comes on and I just can’t help adding some hand/shoulder/arm/hip gestures into my strides. I try to restrain myself when I’m in public places, but at home, anything goes. I’m pretty sure anyone who saw me would think I was a freak, but hey, it passes the time!
I’m not sure if it was my big, big news that had me shakin’ it all over the place today, but I just couldn’t. stop. dancing. the entire time. Daaaancin’ on the treadmillll…
After that, I shook it into the other room, where the music was louder, and continued the one-woman party with the following workout:
- Curls, shoulder presses (x3)
- 30 swiss ball crunches
- Skull crushers, chest flies (x3)
- 1 minute plank hold on elbows
- Chest press, close-grip chest press (x3)
- 30 crunch and twists on swiss ball
- Front raises, upright rows (x3)
- 30 second side plank with stacked feet (each side)
- Bent over rows, lateral side raises (x3)
- 30 cobra side taps
None of the songs on my playlist are particularly new, but I guess they just hit a particular nerve with me today. Here’s some of the ones that really had me moving:
Havana Brown: We Run The Night
Rednex: Cotton Eye Joe (gets me every time)
Nicki Minaj: Starships
Karmin: Brokenhearted (Did anyone see them on Ellen? So good!)
David Guetta: I’m A Machine
(And yes, Proud Mary is on my workout playlist, in case you were curious.)
After my workout, I threw some things in a pot and called it dinner… American Chop Suey style: Whole wheat penne + elbows, large can of crushed tomatoes, 1 pound (cooked) ground turkey, frozen spinach + green beans + 1/2 green pepper
Dinner rolls on the side… yum!
Hope you all had a rockin’ day!!
Rock It Out

It’s funny how you can think you’re in decent shape, but then doing something you haven’t done in a while makes you really reevaluate. I kept up, but I definitely wasn’t shaking it like I used to last semester when I took Zumba twice a week.

Today’s instructor was so high energy and such a good dancer that I felt a little awkward at times. I tend to enjoy classes that incorporate more fundamental moves so you can pick them up quickly and follow along better, but this particular instructor does more shaking and popping than actual moves, so it kind of turned me off.
Don’t get me wrong, I still love Zumba, but back when I was taking classes twice a week it was because I really enjoyed the instructor’s style and thus loved participating in the class. I think meshing with the teacher is a big part of it, and probably why people sometimes don’t enjoy group fitness classes as a whole. If that’s your situation, my advice would be to try again! Eventually you will find a teacher/class you really enjoy and soon you’ll be hooked!!

Today’s food was really boring because I ate on the fly after Zumba and in between games…
{I mean, another one of these sandwiches? really?}
…so in keeping with the dancing theme, let’s talk about music instead.

{yes, please!}

I’ve mentioned before how absolutely vital music is to me during workouts (i.e. I might as well leave the gym if I forgot my headphones), and periodically I’ll download a bunch of new songs when I get bored with my old playlists. I can be having a zero-motivation day but as soon as the music comes on, I’m ready to get after it. Sometimes I find that I’m a little behind in the music arena, but I end up loving certain songs all the same!
To find songs, I take suggestions from friends, other bloggers (like Gina’s and Julie’s spring playlists), and browse the top songs on iTunes. Here are some of the ones I’ve been rocking it out to lately:
- Call Me Maybe – Carly Rae Jepson
- Wild Ones – Flo Rida ft. Sia
- Vem Dancar Kuduro – Lucenzo ft. Big Ali
- Where The Boat Leaves From – Zac Brown Band
- Brokenhearted – Karmin
- In Love With A Girl – Gavin DeGraw
- Starships – Nicki Minaj
- Boyfriend – Justin Bieber
- What Makes You Beautiful – One Direction
- Drive By – Train
- Part Of Me – Katy Perry
- So Good – B.o.B.
- We Run The Night – Havana Brown ft. Pitbull
- Promises – Nero & Skrillex remix
Clearly I don’t really have a “type” when it comes to music. I guess I’m just an equal opportunity listener! Hope you guys will find some new ones here that you’ll enjoy too!
If you have any suggestions of great songs, feel free to leave a comment because I’m always looking for new jams!
