Yesterday at lunch, I decided to run out to the consignment shop downtown. I had a few things in mind for what I couldbe looking for (nightstands are at the top of my list), but I wasn’t going in with very high expectations. Consignment shops/yard sales/flea markets… it’s always hit or miss.
But yesterday was a huge hit.
I browsed around, checking out the furniture and knick knacks they had lining the walls, and then I came across my purchase of the day: a beautiful, dark pine stool.
I know what you’re thinking: “A stool? Really, Megan? That’s what you’re writing about today?”
But yeah, I am. It’s the little things, people!
Ever since I finished my dresser a couple weeks ago, I have been thinking about a way to raise my TV so I could actually see it from my bed. (My bed is really high up so if I’m lying down and the TV is just on the dresser, half the TV gets cut off from view. It’s really inconvenient.) My aunt suggested using a step stool, so that had been stuck in my mind. But where the heck would I find a step stool that was actually pleasing to look at?
Enter: the consignment shop. And this little beauty.
It may not look like much to you, but it solved my problem. I originally thought I’d definitely have to paint it, but once I put the TV on top of it, I actually sort of liked the rustic look of it. So now I think I’ll just leave it there while I think about what else to put around it. Maybe that will help me decide what to do with it.
(Can you tell I’m trying to occupy my mind lately, even with the most trivial of things? Yeah, sorry.)
Speaking of occupying my mind though:
For a while I had been planning on ordering my personal training materials when I got back from California. And even though things changed quite a bit while I was out there, I still decided to go ahead with it when I got back. I always have a hard time pulling the trigger on big purchases, but it is something I have wanted to do for a while now, so I stuck with the plan and just went for it.
I’m excited that by starting this process, I’ll have something to focus on; something for myself. I’ve found myself missing school and studying (gasp! Who would’ve thought?) and I’m looking forward to diving into the book and learning all I can. I’ve never been a big science fan, so I’m a little nervous about that, but I’m confident that my interest and passion will override any lack of experience I may have with the topic.
The materials should arrive sometime soon, so be on the lookout for updates on my progress. I’ve been taking some time off from exercise lately because my mind seemed to need more attention than my body, but I’m looking forward to getting back into it when I’m ready.
Operation: Refinish Dresser was officially a success!!
I painted the third coat when I got out of work today, and I just finished reattaching the hardware a few minutes ago. It took some work, but I absolutely love how it came out. I’m going to let it finish drying tonight, but I can’t wait to fill it with clothes and see how it looks all set up!
It may have been easier to just buy a new dresser, but doing it this way saved me a ton of money and let me get the exact look I wanted! That’s totally worth it to me. Once I get it all set up, I’ll be sure to update with some before and after pictures and an overview of the whole process. _____________________________________________________________________________________
Today’s breakfast was another easy but good one: Pomegranate Chobani with a chopped up plum and strawberries.
Besides noticing that I’m hooked on apples lately, I also noticed that I’m hooked on Parmesan cheese. (It could be because that’s the only cheese in my fridge right now, but oh well.) Today’s lunch included Parm on top of the zucchini, tomatoes, and chicken that I prepped the other night. I heated it up in the microwave at work for a few minutes, and it was really tasty.
I also had some more of those awesome red grapes:
and later, another apple with cinnamon:
After I finished painting my dresser, I whipped up some dinner. I made baked chicken tenders again, with honey, green beans, and whole wheat macaroni with more Parmesan.
It seems like I’ve been eating all of the same foods lately, but I don’t even mind. I guess it’s hard to get bored when everything is so delicious!
I went to bed early last night but Billy just reminded me that I completely forgot about Sons of Anarchy, so I’m going to go try and catch up!
Can you believe tomorrow’s already Thursday?! Have a good night!
Well that second wind I was hoping for yesterday came out of nowhere once I got home from work. I was still tired on the drive home, but once I got there, I immediately changed into some workout clothes and decided to get going. And it really is true what they say: exercise does energize you.
I cranked out another tough leg workout which had me really working hard, and then moved on to other things.
-I prepped a huge thing of zucchini + tomatoes in olive oil and spices to eat this week, plus some chicken for lunches.
-I made/had dinner: baked chicken tenders with honey, and some of that zucchini + tomatoes with a little Parmesan cheese on top. Repetitive, I know, but delicious nonetheless.
And after dinner, I got to work on the good stuff.
-I hung my curtains:
I know the picture makes them look way less-than-fabulous, but don’t be fooled; it really doesn’t do them justice. The only lighting I have in my bedroom at this point is a cheap floor lamp that barely lights up the room (that’s my next project) and the lack of decorations/piles of stuff everywhere makes things a little less-than-appealing at the moment.
But still, I love how the curtains look, how they fit with the wall color, the length, the fullness… everything. I put two panels on the right side because that’s the side I close at night (there’s a huge garden lamp thing right outside the door), and one panel on the left side since I don’t close that side very often.
I’ll update with pictures once the whole room is done and it looks a little better.
-I cleaned my dresser of dust and put on the first coat on paint.
Again, the colors are looking a little funky because it was dark out so I had to put the flash on, but I’m seriously loving the paint choice. It’s dark, but still red enough – and it’s exactly what I was going for. It’s not totally covering the wood grains at this point, but I think that with another coat or two it will look great.
By the time I sat down after all that plus a few other chores, I was wiped. I guess that second wind couldn’t last forever!
All I wanted to do this morning was relax and watch TV, so I pushed my workout off until tonight. Hopefully I will get it in, but if I don’t, then oh well. I’ve come to learn that it’s not the end of the world.
Breakfast was super simple this morning. I don’t normally buy the individual/flavored Chobani yogurts (because they are more expensive and have more sugar than my beloved 32-oz plain), but I love how simple they make things. I just sliced up some strawberries, threw them on top and voila! Breakfast in a bowl – but without the dishes.
Hope you’re having a great week so far!
Good news: I finished sanding my dresser!
It wasn’t necessarily easy, but it definitely wasn’t that bad. I honestly think the difficulty I experienced had more to do with my perfectionist nature and my fear of upsetting others than anything else: I probably spent a little more time than was actually necessary making sure all the spots were perfectly sanded down. I know you pretty much have to just rough it up enough to get the paint to stick, but I couldn’t help trying to make it all look exactly the same. I also kept stopping because I was afraid that my neighbors were going to be annoyed, but in reality, I think the noise was worse for me than for anyone else. A few people walked by while I was out there, and most barely even looked up at me, so it couldn’t have been that bad.
All and all, it probably took me about two more hours last night, and now it’s pretty much ready for paint! I’m going to look over it once more tonight and then move it back inside for the weekend before I start painting it next week. Woohoooo!
I also stopped at the hardware store on my way home last night and picked up this can of spray paint:
I decided that instead of spending a whole bunch of money on new hardware, I’d just spend $4 on some paint and spruce up the old pulls a bit. They are already decorative and nice-looking, so I think with some new paint, they will be good to go. I wanted more of a flat, dull gold/bronze, but this is all the local store had, and I didn’t feel like going all the way to Home Depot. I tested it out on one of the pulls though, and I actually think it’s going to look great. We shall see!
When I finished last night, I was absolutely covered in sawdust. Note to self: Do not, I repeat, DO NOT tip sander upside down while on. This may seem like common sense, but when I was leaning over the edge to do the sides, it just felt more natural to point the sander down, with the bag that collects the dust on the top. BIG MISTAKE! The dust would come flying out, straight into my face. I’m sure that’s really healthy for you.
Oh well, I just dusted off (ha ha) and got on with my life.
For dinner, I had another lightly breaded and baked pork chop with butternut squash, roasted green beans, and applesauce. It was the same dinner as Monday night’s, but equally as delicious.
And to keep up with my creature of habit identity, I decided to have another repeat meal for breakfast this morning: Vanilla Chocolate Chunk Chobani yogurt with strawberries, raspberries, and some Kashi cinnamon oats cereal.
I can’t get enough of this stuff and I’m seriously sad that another 16 oz. container is almost gone. They need to start making it in the big daddy containers!
It’s funny, on Mondays and Tuesdays I feel like the week couldn’t possibly drag on any slower, but then somehow I wake up and it’s already Thursday.
Have a great day!!
Unfortunately, it didn’t work – at all – but the good news is that I got my errand done before my stomach completely ate itself.
I ran to Joann Fabric on my lunch hour to look for fabric again because I figured that since my dresser is coming along, this weekend would be a perfect time to get my bedroom curtains made.
Originally I was set on some kind of red patterned fabric, but the fact that my dresser is now going to be red (coupled with the fact that I just can’t seem to find the right red pattern and I’m getting impatient) pushed me to go with something different. There was one pattern I liked that had different colored abstract flowers against a sand-colored background, but this is the one I ultimately went with:
I figured it’s demure enough to not totally overwhelm the room, but will still lend a little pop of excitement. I’m thinking between the brown/beige patterned curtains, the red dresser, my white bed, and a few pops of colored decorations/prints here and there, things are going to start looking pretty cool eventually. To all the interior designers out there: am I on the right track with all of this?!
When I got back, I literally couldn’t wait to tear into the beast of a salad I packed for lunch. It may not look it, but it really was huge – packed with iceburg lettuce, spinach, green peppers, cucumbers, strawberries, chicken, feta cheese, and Panera’s raspberry vinaigrette dressing.
On the side I also had a few almonds.
I don’t know why – things were not really out of the ordinary today – but for some reason my appetite just seemed insatiable. Two hours later, I was starving for a snack, so I had an apple with cinnamon I brought from home and a snack-size bag of Smartfood popcorn my coworker gave me a few days ago. I haven’t had Smartfood in ages, but it’s a good thing I had it stashed away because I ran out of snacks pretty quickly today!
It’s a good thing I’m home now because I’m thinking another snack might be in order before I get started working on my dresser. I’m hoping to get a lot more sanding done before I stop for dinner!!
