Office Workouts

I drink so much water at work that I sometimes feel like I’m always getting up to go to the bathroom.  It may be inconvenient, but it’s not necessarily a bad thing; it certainly beats sitting at my desk for eight hours straight with no movement at all.  But today I decided to make the trips even more worthwhile for my health by adding mini exercises to each one.

All day, whenever I would go to the bathroom, I would do ten squats when I got there.  It takes less than 30 seconds to perform the set, and it gets my blood pumping again.  Not only does this help me physically, but it also helps to give me a mini jolt of energy before I return to my desk.

It’s a little tough to think of what other exercises I could do at work, but I’m going to try to in order to make it a habit.  Off of the top of my head, I’m thinking calf raises, incline pushups against the wall/door, and maybe some (bodyweight) bicep curls, tricep kickbacks, and rows.  It’s not like these alone will get me big, huge muscles, but doing them is definitely better than not!

It’s a good thing I’m not going to be cooped in the office much over the next few weeks because clearly I get way too creative… One good thing about being out in the warehouses doing audits is that there’s a lot more walking around so I don’t really need to come up with stuff like this.

Another thing I like to do when I’m in the office all day is stretch.  It’s pretty easy to keep things discreet and still get a good stretch in while sitting at your desk if you just extend your legs or arms while you work.  Lean to one side, twist around, stretch out your legs in front of you… whatever works. I’m already feeling the soreness creep in from yesterday’s leg workout, so it felt great to stretch things out a bit today.

Lunch was a two-parter today, but only because I couldn’t fit it all in one container.  I think it would’ve been awesome as one big (huge!) salad, but it was still very yummy separate.

Part one was a romaine, spinach, green pepper, cucumber, feta cheese, and BV salad:

(Don’t let that picture deceive you; it was packed with goodness.)

Part two was a huge bowl of watermelon and cantaloupe:

(Would you believe that I used to not like watermelon?  I have no idea what was wrong with the kid version of myself.  I used to literally hate so many of my current favorite foods: nuts, yogurt, cheese, watermelon, eggs, pretty much all veggies… Yeah, weird kid. I know.)

Later in the afternoon, I had a little bit of trail mix:

Plus this delicious piece of dark chocolate “sponge candy” my coworker brought in with him from Buffalo.  I had never heard of sponge candy, but I’ll pretty much eat anything covered in dark chocolate.  It was really different and quite good!

Questions:

How do you try to sneak in exercise during the day?

Have you ever heard of sponge candy?
